A Rock from the Sky
Impact, shaken as in a toy car, holy
shit. The apprehension of unseen damage.
Seat-belted, breathing deep, curbing hard
and parking. Nothing I could point to, yet.
But, once out on my feet facing the car
roof punctured through! Like errant space debris,
a rock – really malefic. Twice head-sized
and mottled with dirt it lay in the right back seat.
On-lookers gathered as at a birth and gaped.
Two, pressing towards me from the blast crew,
the older in a hard hat sheepishly:
‘Never had this happen to me before.’
Someone asked, would I be wanting the rock,
as a keepsake for my garden maybe? No!
I drove slowly to the auto shop
in shock. Of all things, worried it might rain.
